Salamat for your manners On the road, drivers may flash their lights for some time to communicate aggressively in anger, if a driver cuts into another lane or tailgating. Sometimes it’s also to show courtesy of thanks and consideration for letting them pass without hassle or to be prepared in advance for the road up ahead, while flashing their car lights briefly can signify a warning such as the presence of police, an accident, a fallen tree and several other potential dangers. It pays to have good manners. No matter how anybody else responds or reacts, everyone can control how we deal it. Are you familiar with or speak any other language or dialect? You’re welcome to add your own way of saying thanks, pardon me etc. From a student travel site I wanted to learn a few. In Mandarin: China, Malaysia Singapore, Taiwan Xie xie (pronounced ‘shay shay’) dedicated to a British Chinese friend who goes out of her way to give anything. Hindi: India Shukria (pronunced suk-ri-yaa) or dhanyawaad (pronounced ‘dhuhn-Ya-Vaad’) for an Indian German friend. Places I’m dreaming of visiting some day, but don’t know how to say thanks in their language: Portuguese: Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique Obrigado (pronounced ‘ob-ree-gado’) Russian: Russia, Israel, Mongolia Spasiba (pronounced ‘spa-see-ba’) Korean: North and South Korea Komapsumnida (pronounced ‘gam-sa-hap-ni-da’) Cantonese: Hong Kong, China M̀h’gōi (use this for when someone does something for you i.e when a waiter puts down your food. Pronounced ‘m-goi’) Dōjeh (use this for when someone gives you something i.e a gift, or a lift somewhere. Pronounced ‘do-ze’) Thai: Thailand Khob-kun-Ka If you are a woman (pronounced kob-koon-ka) Khob-kun-Krub If you are a man (pronounced kob-koon-kab) Polish: Poland Dziękuję (pronounced ‘jen-ku-je’) for the Polish and parents I encounter and work with. Dutch: Netherlands, Belgium Dank je (pronounced ‘dahnk yuh’) Czech: Czech Rebublic Děkuji (pronounced ‘dye-koo-yi’) Zulu: South Africa Ngiyabonga (pronounced ‘gi-ya-bong-ga’) Swedish: Sweden, Finland Tack (pronounced ‘tack’) |
