I enjoy what i do but i like to be able to take a break between jobs. But on the other hand i don't like to say no to people i know that need help doing their projects. So thats where i'm at...keeping busy and not getting into trouble...

When I was in Japan in October I went to a temple and made a small to the monks and chose my fortune. To get my fortune I had to shake a small metal drum containing chopsticks and then tip it upside down for one to fall out. Next I compared the characters on it to the drawers on the wall and found the one with my matching characters. Then I opened the drawer and withdrew my a piece of paper. Voila! just like that I had my fortune. Most of it was in Japanese So I was somewhat thankful that the monks had a small english translation for us foreigners..... Why do I say somewhat? Well because my fortune was Bad Luck! The worst you can receive.

The first thing it said was 'Don't Travel, if you do the mountains will stop your bus, if you sail there will be no wind! The second thing it said was if you are building a house STOP! next was if you need money you will find none! And if you are ill you will not get better! It also said I would not find love! I don't know about others but to me thats some very Bad Luck!

So there I was in tokyo with a return plane ticket for the next day and a bad fortune telling me not to travel! What to do??? Well I reread my fortune and discovered the loop hole! It didn't say don't fly!! Ah ha I was SAFE to return home. Whew! So the next day I boarded the plane and flew back home.

The flight from tokyo was quite uneventful which is a good thing when flying. My connecting flight from Vancouver to my home town however was a little more eventful. First thing the flight was delayed 4hrs due to mechanical problems....But then we were advised everything was fine and we could board the plane. We all did so and settled in to our seats and then just when the plane should have departed from the terminal the pilot came over the intercom advising us that we would have to wait a little while as there were still a few more mechanical issues to be attended too but they appeared to be minor so we shouldn't be delayed too much longer. After about ten minutes the pilot came back on and advised us that the problems were greater than hoped and that we would have to deplane. The good news was they had another plane at another gate that we could board immediately.

So we did. This time we got half way out to the runway when the plane stopped and they had to send a service vehicle out to tow us back to the terminal! At the first sign of trouble I did refer mentally to my Japanese fortune and wondered but was still pretty confident in my loophole logic. Now however I was in serious doubt of my ability to out smart the monks fortune telling abilities. Finally after another long wait we were able to fly home without further mishaps!

Well at this moment it seems luck is still against me in my quest to travel. Tomorrow I was hopng to leave early in the morning and drive to Calgary. However we got rain today and rain raises the risk of avalanches. Rain or wet snow makes the snow on the mountains heavy and gravity makes it want to come down onto the road. So I just read the road report and it advises that the highway is currently closed due to a large avalanche and that it may not reopen tomorrow as the risk of more avalanches is too high. I will check again in the morning but I am not optimistic that the highway crews can stabilize the snow pack and clear the road that quick.

I was hoping that there was a time limit to a bad fortune or at very least a fading of its potency...

I'm going to Alberta for 7 or 8 days starting on wednesday. I will be visiting and doing some renovations for friends over there. My and in law are already in Calgary visiting her mother and waiting for me to arrive so we can tile the floor in the kitchen together.
Her mother and I have been divorced 15 years now but we still remain good friends so its nice to help out when I can. I know its rather unusual to be friends with your ex but I think it is a measure of character when exes can be friends. At the time of the divorce tensions were high but I think both of us were able to over come that for a variety of reasons. Number one reason was for the sake of our . Number two is because we never stopped seeing the good in each other. Number three is our friendship is very unconditional and non judgmental. There are many more reasons just as there are for any friendship.

The photo shows what the scenery looks like between here and Calgary.

Christmas dinner

I was listening to the radio yesterday and it was a phone in radio show about Christmas and what people do that is different. There were many callers but one stood out from the rest. The caller phoned in on behalf of all the people of his community. I didn't catch the name of the community but it is a small town of about 5000 people way up north.

Seven years ago some people got together and decided to put on a Christmas dinner for the whole community. They didn't ask for donations they just asked that everyone that wanted to come to the Christmas diner supply enough food for themselves. They went to the two local grocery stores and asked if they could use their kitchen facilities to do the cooking and both stores eagerly said yes.

Well the first dinner didn't go off with out a few glitches but in the end 1700 people enjoyed Christmas diner with each other! Last year the number of people who attended was over 4000! It takes them 7 hours to feed everybody. Currently their biggest problem is convincing new comers to the town that its not a Charity dinner for the needy but rather its a social event for the whole community.

The average temp on Christmas day up there is -40 degrees but this year the forecast was for a balmy -10c.

I would love to live in a community like that. Preferably one in a warmer climate but still the thought warms my heart.

Merry Christmas too all!

A Hong Kong schoolboy who died in a traffic accident has brought festive hope to at least seven other patients through the rare mass of a large number of his vital organs.

Fourteen-year-old Miu Chi-ho died from brain injuries after being hit by a bus several days ago, but doctors were able to save the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, skin, bones and corneas of the healthy and athletic -ager.

"There were at least seven recipients of the organs," said a spokeswoman with Hong Kong's Hospital Authority.

Miu's 41 year-old mother, a single parent on social welfare, ignored the protests of superstitious relatives in insisting on the donations to "bring hope to other families," Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper reported Friday.

"Even though I'm devastated, I want to do something for society," the paper quoted her as saying.

"(My ) is very great. Even though he's left us ... we can still hear him breathe, and his heart beat. He's already become an angel."

Doctors hailed Miu's case as an example to others in Hong Kong where organ donorship is traditionally frowned upon given the Chinese belief in keeping bodies whole to allow the deceased to rest in heavenly peace.

"This is a very encouraging event... we're desperately in need of organs," said Dr. Choi Kin, president of the Hong Kong Medical Association.

Last year, only 4.2 of every million people in Hong Kong donated organs to science upon dying, a fraction of the rate in the U.S., according to the Apple Daily.

So no sign of my wounded deer or the coyote. lots of tracks in the snow but none of them look like they are from the wounded doe. hmmmm.

My phoned this morning. Very unusual for her to phone in the morning on a work day. She was stuck in snow on a country road with no traffic. So she phone for a tow truck and phone her work to tell them she would be late and then phoned me to chat and pass the time until the tow truck arrived. It's always nice to hear from her though I wish I could been able to help. It was also nice to know that she was calm and and in control of the situation. She has no shortage of confidence for which I am proud of her.

It's so unfortunate that our must live so far away but they have to go where the jobs are. But there are so many benefits if a family can stay close together. I guess getting pulled out of a snow bank for free is just a small one! lol

It is basic human nature to want to be needed...

This morning I looked out to gaze across the lake and see what weather was coming. But as soon as I did I noticed there was a deer in my back yard. It's not unusual to see deer in my yard but this one has a severely broken leg. The leg just dangles and flaps around as it tries to hobble. It first started appearing around here about a month ago. It lays down on the island and eats and then hobbles off into the trees. I see her most days. I think she finds my yard a safe place to hang around.

Of course I am worried for her. I phoned the Fish and Wildlife Branch and they said there was nothing they could do, but that I should phone back if it laid down and couldn't get up. So I keep a fond eye out for her.

I am surprised that she has survived this long. She must be in terrible pain all day long. Just the thought of the bones in her leg grinding together send shiver up my spine. I'm not a veterinarian but I was sure the first time I saw her that the leg can't heal. But still she prevails foraging along the lake shore for food.

Nature is cruel though. The safety of my yard was disturbed this morning when a coyote followed her . It hung back 15 meters or so. Patiently waiting for an opportunity to dart in for the kill. She crossed over to the island and when the coyote fooled she went into the lake and swam over to the neighbours wharf and took refuge underneath. The coyote sat on my wharf and watched her.

A stand off had been achieved. For over an hour the coyote laid on the wharf staring at the deer in the cold water under the other wharf.

I don't know what happened after that as I had to go into town. I wonder if I will see her tomorrow?

PASTA DIET -- IT REALLY WORKS !!

1.. You walka pasta da bakery.
2.. You walka pasta da candy store.
3.. You walka pasta da Ice Cream shop.
4... You walka pasta da table and fridge.
You will lose weight!

AND......!
CONCERNED ABOUT TOO MANY CARBS IN YOUR DIET?

For those of you who watch what you eat,
here's the final word on nutrition and health.
It's a relief to know the truth
after all those conflicting
nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION
Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills

I read an article in our local newspaper today. Our local police chief stated that the police are going to crack down on drivers who don't wear seat belts when driving. He went on to state that 50% of traffic fatalities are the result of not wearing a seat belt. HMMMMM. Let me think about that...... Ok so what that means is the other 50% were wearing seat belts, right?

I wonder do any asian countries have seat belt laws?

Todays pic is a shot from my friends balcony in Hong Kong. Wish I was still there.
