Show the love while you can. My tatang (father) passed away the other day and we are very saddened. Our relationship with him is not typical, he has a serious gambling problem. We hardly spend time with him as we were growing up, he hardly know my and never present in any important occasions in our lives except for my wedding. He is the least ideal father but we love him anyway and I’m sure he love us too albeit he did not show it nor made us feel he did. He never hurt us intentionally either. I so wanted him to be part of my life and of my but it did not seem like that from his side. I was also hesitant because of his gambling problem, I was worried that he will just keep asking for money if I let him be part of me. I could have shown him love anyway. I wish I made a conscious decision to see him with my when we go to Philippines instead of him coming to us, although to ask for money. He invited us before to visit his place with his other family but I never went, I did not even bother getting his address. That chance is lost, now that he is gone. One thing I learned from this is; “If you love someone, show the love while you have the chance. Even if it doesn’t look like you don’t get the love back, show the love anyway. You don’t want to have the regrets later and say I wished I have shown you my love.” Looking back, remembering his smiles and laughter when he comes to our home back then I know in my own little way I was able to show him some love. I wanted to show him more but that chance is gone now but I will keep this lesson in mind and share it to others. Show the love while you can, even if you don’t get the love back the way you expect. Love is never a waste, love not shown is. For those who receive or felt love if you can't reciprocate at least acknowledge while you still can. “Use the quotation for the occasion; do not make an occasion for the quotation.” |

Sorry about your loss. Just make sure you express the love you have for the rest of the family. I'm a senior citizen . Don't expect me to remember anything

Thanks ta Jane , I can relate to your children a bit, my dad was an absentee father and distant. I wanted him to be part of our lives but he was not there, I wanted to show him more love despite that but distance and his gambling prevented us but like I said I was somehow able to show him some love in my little own way though I wish I could have shown him more. Like you my mother taught us well and we never hated him at all. They were separated for a long time and lived miles apart but remained friends. “Use the quotation for the occasion; do not make an occasion for the quotation.”

Thanks for sharing, at least your dad was somehow there for you but me I don't remember much of him in my childhood. I have learned from it by not doing it to my children. We can only move on. “Use the quotation for the occasion; do not make an occasion for the quotation.”

Thanks for the thought Tinks. It is different when you know that your father is gone from the start than having a father living with you but never there for you or did not have time for you. “Use the quotation for the occasion; do not make an occasion for the quotation.”
