Can there be relationship without commitment?

When we enter a relationship we are making a commitment. To me relationship is akin to commitment and commitment means obligation or involvement, it comes with responsibilities. Just like for example a working relationship. When you enter a working relationship as an employee you are obliged to come to work, follow the company's rule and be involved among all other things. That is commitment. The boss or the business owner has the obligation to pay your wages, look after the company's production and viability among other things.

If you are in a relationship and you live together you are obliged to come home to your partner, it is your obligation to share time together and be involved among other things. It is your obligation to make your partner feel the love, make them feel special. If you are in a LDR and you want it to work then you show your commitment by communicating. You show your involvement by giving time to listen, spend time, make plans together. It is a 2 way street. It's giving and receiving. If there is no commitment or involvement then that is not a relationship. .

Commitment is dealing with the challenges that arises in a relationship, non commitment is running away or denying these challenges. Commitment doesn't mean marriage, doesn't mean living together it is simply working together towards a specific cause or goal and that is to keep the relationship alive. Non committal is when you come and see the other only as you please or in your spare time and not caring about your partner's feelings.

Do you agree? Tell me, what is your definition of commitment in a relationship?

"open relationship" is another phrase with vague meaning but then again whether it's an open relationship or not as per my definition above you still need commitment meaning you have to spend time , be involved, show you care or it's not a relationship. The commitment may be is of a lesser degree. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think commitment grows as two people grow closer. The idea of an "open relationship" is only spoken out loud and becomes the norm when one questions the commitment the other cannot give. In open relationships, there is always someone bound to get hurt. My take on it is run away from it as soon as you can. Either you're just not it for him/her, or your partner is just incapable of being faithful. Often times its just the latter. Spending time and showing you care, or allowing someone to deceive you with temporal affections is only throwing yourself into the pit. Commitment is absolute. Showing affection and "love," there are circumstances in which we are not always able to give that. With commitment, no matter what struggle, you stick by. Showing affection does not in any way fall under the definitions of commitment. Involvement maybe, but not commitment. Those are two different subject matters.

Ok thanks that's clear so we still put time to it or commit time whether open relationship or not.

Thank you agony aunt. for the input. I agree with you . As for showing affection it is one of the many ways of showing commitment.

That is what I believe too. So to me no commitment means no relationship but commitment doesn't mean marriage it doesn't mean exclusivity to me either but having said that I am a one man woman so I demand the same. Commitment to me is involvement towards a common goal.
