Freak show

Today is freak day at the festival in Brussels. As I enter the movie theater, i am ankle deep in drool. Yes, the dogs of Pavlov are anxiously awaiting their first bone of the evening.

Brothers of the Head. A Siamese twin turn punk stars and take England by storm. Fame, happiness, parties, drugs … the boys are in 7the heaven. But it is only skin deep as their veins are filled with bad blood between them. Even though they can not imagine a life without each other, they want to be separated as well. Especially when one of the boys falls in love. The movie is shot like a rockumentary which gives it an air of authenticity. But despite the outstanding acting performance of both guys, i wondered why this movie was at this festival. In short, a good "rockumentary" but no bone for horror-salivating-dogs.
Next!

Late Bloomer. A Japanese movie about a handicapped man who realizes one day that his life is not normal, so he stops trying to act normal and goes out on a killing spree. Very shocking! You will never look at a person in a wheel chair with the same innocent eyes. The editing of some sequences is outstanding and highly experimental with an excellent soundtrack underneath.Maybe the most disturbing fact is that a real handicapped man plays the role of the main character. He is as handicapped in real life as depicted in the movie. A bone that you can chew on for the next decade.

Alice Sweet Alice. A "horror"movie with a young Brook Shields … but hold your horses guys … she does not last long as she gets killed. The question is by who? Everyone points the finger to the jealous sister. And she does not really act innocent as evil has rented a chamber in her heart. So she is the obvious suspect … A good Saturday night movie but nothing more.

Meat Ball Machine. The most juicy bone for last. If you ever saw both Tetsuo movies of Tsukamoto, you will have a bit of a déjà vu feeling. As like in the Tetsuo movies, Meat Ball Machine is about human bodies transformed into swiss pocket knives for butchering games. Canons shoot out their chests, their hands are circular saws … humans as walking weapons fighting each other and all this to entertain the parasites that took hold of the host-body. But unlike Tetsuo, the transformed humans are kitsch, think bad guys in Power Rangers. In this movie, the parasites use the bodies of two lovers as their toys. Will their love be strong enough to not destroy each other?
