Indifference: Is it an emotional disease?

..Please pardon me for writing this one, but lately, I am challenged to "analyze" people (specially MEN) who became "INDIFFERENT" after a major break-up or who've gone through a painful separation or divorce, regardless (or irregardless) of the reasons behind the split). They usually go through LOVE-HATE, STOP-GO cycles and may sometimes undergo seclusion and withdrawal from the rest of the world. Below are some of the definitions of INDIFFERENCE:

1 : marked by impartiality : UNBIASED

2 a : that does not matter one way or the other b : of no importance or value one way or the other

3 a : marked by no special liking for or dislike of something b : marked by a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern for something : APATHETIC

4 : being neither excessive nor inadequate : MODERATE

5 a : being neither good nor bad : MEDIOCRE b : being neither right nor wrong

6 : characterized by lack of active quality : NEUTRAL

To me, number 3 is what is more disturbing. I personally came across 2 FFF members, and one in the real world who seem to suffer from this emotional illness...I can just hope and pray that one day, they'll find their NORMAL SELVES AGAIN...

since in my honest opinion nobody is really normal "normal"
i will not call it a disease but rather an emotional smoke screen or walls to protect themselves from being hurt again or falling into the same painful situation they rather forget. like the phrase ignorance is bliss, if you don't care, you have nothing to lose

Fear of taking the next step and hurting again unless they like the chase, have no fear of rejection or could deal with pain and loneliness.
Defensive wall.

Well, if it is the outcome of a very traumatic experience, and the person allowed himself to be wallowed by causative event, then I would say, one may even end up seeing a "shrink" in order for him to move on and go back to the realities in life. I know it is harsh, but indifference can really ruin one's chances to find another meaningful relationship. After all, just because the previous one was traumatic, doesn't mean the next one will be just as bad. That is a very unfair judgement. Unless, of course, if the judgement also has been derailed.

But of course, you are very correct in saying that most people build a wall to protect themselves, but being indifferent is an emotional and social issue that needs to be dealt with. To me, I should not blame others for the misfortune that I experienced, and I should not pick on others for the insecurities that I am dealing with. Like I said, there are other ways to resolve some issues, and for as long as I believe that NO MAN IS AN ISLAND, I will continue to treat others and give them opportunities to prove themselves, rather than believing that THEY ARE JUST AS NO GOOD as the one who caused my despair....but, that is just me.

that is TRUE, Janey..Defensive wall it is, but it is also an offensive wall, since the persons affected by the act of indifference will feel bad, knowing that they have nothing to do with our past misfortunes. Why blame Anna for what Juana did?

My guess is that, most men may already know that they are indifferent, but are NOT doing anything to correct it...you know what I'm saying?..They probably think that they'll get even with their past "offenders" if they treat the next candidates for romance indifferently.. And maybe, this behavior can also be subconcious and unless it is brought to the attention of the person, then, he may not be fully aware that he is being indifferent...(dohhh!)

If the question is, Is it an emotional "disease" then it can be- clinically i would say it is by a sort of serious disorder. If the question is, Is it an emotional disturbance then i would say it can be- maybe she was just confused or something but that doesnt mean she/he is indifferent as a person. As yours was shared from the writer's mind, so was mine quoted from a psychiatrist's page based on the question itself, a disease which may mean clinical.

Thats why i mentioned the Schizoid personality disorder coz you used the word, Disease.

Disease- medical condition: a condition in humans, plants, or animals that results in pathological symptoms and is not the direct result of physical injury;

2. specific disorder: a disorder in humans, animals, or plants with recognizable signs and often having a known cause

Thanks for making a research on this, my fellow FEELer ...So, from a "shrink's bible", it can be an emotional disease...as the outcome of it may manifest physically sometimes, and then, it becomes clinical..
