THE FILIPINO (Part 2 of a Series)

The trouble is that most Filipinos, unlike others, find it rather impossible to laugh at themselves and instead derive pleasure in laughing at the misfortune of others, which the dictionary defines as “scha-den-freu-de.”

“Pangit,” a Filipino will call out to a friend, chuckling as he does so, and yet he too has a face only a mother can love.

Slapstick is the Filipino’s kind of comedy, like a disabled person slipping on a banana peel, or a fat fellow ripping them back of his pants while doing bending exercises.

That does not seem to be the case with the women, I am happy to say.

Women do not hastily ridicule any of their own, even one whose physical shortcomings could only get her thrown into the river as food for the crocodiles, although a reckless few dare join beauty contests, foolishly ignoring what the mirror tells them.
