Pets are Wonderful

I have almost always had pets, as a young boy, I had a dog, took in a stray cat, and took over the care of my stepfathers hunting dog, after he realized hunting dogs have to be trained. I didn't always give them the care they needed, a 10-12 year old simply doesn't know how, until someone teaches him, and growing up in rural Alabama nobody taught proper pet care. When a got sick he was on his own, a new puppy was free, vets cost money, that's just how it was. I look back now and feel guilty, but, you cant change the past, and I did what I was told to do, by the adults in my life. I left my family behind when I was 14, they didn't treat any better than dogs, and so I have never regretted it. I lived in trailers, small apartments, army barracks and so never had another pet until I got a house and a wife, the wife only lasted a few years, the dog, from a local shelter, about ten. His name was Bear, a black Labrador mix, he was my buddy, just a thoroughly sweet boy, the wife left, no problem, Bear passed, I was a wreck for months, I couldn't be around dogs without wanting to cry like a baby. At the time I thought I would never do it again, never put myself through that pain again, but, some months later, I came home from work to find a sick kitten on my steps, she was so tiny I immediately knew I had to try and help. I spent the night with her wrapped in a warm towel in my lap, until the vet opened the next morning, a few days later she was running around, climbing the drapes, like she owned the place. That was Lilbit, I honestly don't know how many years we were friends, close to twenty, but, she opened the door to so many more wonderful furry friends, I have come to realize that yes it always hurts when they leave, but, the love, honesty and friendship they give makes it worth it.

I currently have two cats and lost 1 in 2016. It was a devastating experience. Pets are like my children and they love unconditionally. We commonly don’t take cats as pets in the islands. Most of the time they are considered nuisance. I grew up with dogs and my father, being an animal lover, considered the dogs as family we can not only play with but sleep with. However, when i first adopted a rescued cat because it chose me, the need to be loved when he brushed against my leg was run thru to my heart and I was goner. He was scraggly, with bald spots and was running a fever. He made life a little bit brighter everyday for the 16 years he was with me. I still miss him and I sure hope that there is a heaven for pets as they give more than we ever give them in life.
