John 5:31-47
Witnesses to Jesus

Jesus said to the Jews, “If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified. But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth, I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in the light. But I have testimony greater than John’s. the works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form, and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent. You search the scriptures, because you think have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. But you do not want to come to me to have life.

I do not accept human praise; moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you. I came in the name of my Father but you do not accept me, yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope. For if you had believed Moses, you would have believe me. Because he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

John 5:17-30
The Work of the

Jesus answered to the Jews: “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work. “For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath but also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.
Jesus answered and said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, a cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing for what he does, his will do also. For the Father loves his and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the give life to whomever he wishes. Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his , so that all may honor the just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the does not honor the Father also sent him. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me his eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his the possession of life in himself. And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the of Man. Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs aill hear his voice and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation.
I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear; and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.”

Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24
Joseph, Foster Father of Jesus

Jacob [became] the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with a through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this has been conceived in her. She will bear a and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus summarizes his entire approach to life with two simple phrases: “You shall love God… you shall love your neighbor.” Nothing could be simpler. For him, too, love is everything. It is what ultimately “moves the sun and the other stars.” Commenting on these words of Jesus, Pope Paul VI suggests the following examination of conscience:
“It is necessary,” he says, “to strengthen the direction of our life. It is easy to perceive whether we have this rectitude, or whether we are headed in the wrong direction, by asking ourselves, in the secrecy of our hearts, the following simple but significant questions. What do I desire most in life? What influences most my decisions? What do I consider most important… We must not let ourselves be swept along by the chaotic maelstrom of the world around us. We must give ourselves a point of reference, a pole of direction, a sense for life, in order that it may be really human, that is, Christian.

Mark 12:28-34
The Greatest Commandment

One of the scribes, when he came forward and heard them disputing and saw how well he had answered the Sadducees, asked [Jesus], “Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “ The first is this; ‘Hear O Israel! The Lord God our God is the Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this; ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandments greater than these.”
The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he.’ And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offering and sacrifices.”
And when Jesus saw that [he] answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46
The Parable of the Tenants

[Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people,] “Hear another parable, There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my .’
But when the tenants saw the , they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” They answered him, “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.” Jesus said to them, “Did you never read the scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes’?
“Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruits.” when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them. And although they were attempting to arrest him, they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Lets reflect...

Today's Gospel...Luke 16:19-31
The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Lets reflect...

The story of Lazarus is about compassion, or more exactly about the lack of it. Here Jesus invents a “teaching story” or parable in which he stages a rich man who has no compassion for a poor man living beside him. After his death, the rich man is condemned for his hardness of heart. this is the main thrust of the story. The fact that it deals with financial wealth is rather secondary, and we must take note of this very carefully. If we don’t, we will think that this teaching of Jesus is only for the financially wealthy. But, in truth, financial wealth is only a stage prop of the story. For lack of compassion can characterize any of us in the various aspects of our social lives, I can lack compassion towards those who are less “fortunate” than I am in terms of family life, brains, heath, good looks, education, or friends. How do I treat the Lazaruses I meet every day in my own life?
But this parable contains another important teaching. It corrects the mistaken way which the rich man understands the mechanism of conversion. Because the rich man is like a lot of people who seek religious sensationalism. They are always looking for miracles, private revelations, strange phenomena. But Jesus warns us against this kind of attitude. We have in the Bible and in the teaching of the Church everything we need for our Christian life and our salvation. Waiting for anything more amounts to refusing the grace of God.
