Filipino expatriates urged not to lose hope on ‘OAV’; Philippines bishop visiting Kuwait
KUWAIT CITY: “Overseas Filipino Workers should not lose hope on the national electoral pro-cess despite the challenges that we are facing these days,” disclosed on Wednesday Most Rev Romulo De La Cruz, the visiting Bishop of Antique, Philippines who arriv-ed in Kuwait on Tuesday on invitation of the Vicar Apostolic of Kuwait, H.L. Camillo Ballin. The Filipino Bishop was welcomed at the airport by Bishop Ballin, Philippine Labour Att-ache Leopoldo De Jesus, Assistant Lab-our Attache Elmira Sto. Domingo and Rev. Fr. Ben Barrameda.
De La Cruz who is here on a friendly visit expressed happiness upon his arrival and thanked Bishop Camillo for his invitation. With the commencement of the Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) on April 14, the visiting Bishop took the opportunity to reiterate the statement of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on the Philippines national elections. “We have read on the papers and seen on TV that there is a low turn-out of OFWs participating in the OAV. Some may have been discouraged in the outcome of the 2004 national elections but OFWs should not lose hope and they should exercise their right of suffrage because along with that right is a social responsibility in helping shape our nation towards development,” he stressed.
Bishop De La Cruz is the head of an inter-agency Task Force CHAMP which stands for Clean Honest, Accurate, Meaningful and Peaceful election in the Diocese of Antique. He stressed that hope keeps people going and once this is lost, everything ceases in life, hence, he urged all OFWs to go out and cast their votes and let their voices be heard. There are about half-million overseas absentee voters across the globe with 19,003 registered voters in Kuwait. Political analysts in the Philippines believe that the chunk of overseas absentee voters may constitute the crucial swing vote and determine who gets to occupy the last three or even four of the 12 Senate seats up for grabs in the national elections.
On Tuesday, Bishop De La Cruz joined Bishop Camillo, the representative of the Papal Nuncio, the Clergy, members of religious congregations and the Catholic Community in Kuwait during a concelebrated mass to mark the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI and to celebrate the second anniversary of his election as Pope. Meanwhile, Bishop De La Cruz is set to have an audience with the OFWs on Friday at 11:30 am at the Holy Family Cathedral. He would be discussing with them issues and other matters affecting the OFWs. “We are inviting everybody to be there,” he stated.

HRT 'may have caused cancer deaths'

A thousand British women may have died from ovarian cancer since 1991 because they had hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
The death toll estimate emerged from the biggest investigation of links between HRT and cancer ever undertaken.
New findings from the Million Women Study suggest that HRT use in the UK resulted in 1,300 extra cases of ovarian cancer between 1991 and 2005. Of these women, 1,000 died of the disease.
Previous results from the same study have linked HRT with an increased risk of breast and womb cancer.
The research indicates that a woman's risk of suffering ovarian cancer returns to normal within a few years of giving up HRT.
To put the findings in perspective, they mean that over a period of five years there is likely to be one extra case of ovarian cancer among every 2,500 women receiving hormone replacement therapy. For every 3,300 women on HRT, there is estimated to be one additional death from ovarian cancer.
However the strength of the association between HRT and ovarian cancer has alarmed experts involved in the study.
Their leader, Professor Valerie Beral, director of Cancer Research UK's epidemiology unit at Oxford University, said: "The results of this study are worrying because they show that not only does HRT increase the risk of getting ovarian cancer, it also increases a woman's risk of dying of ovarian cancer. This study, along with our previous research, clearly demonstrates the cancer risks of taking HRT."
Ovarian cancer is the fourth most common female cancer in the UK. Each year about 6,700 women develop the disease and 4,600 die from it.
The Million Women Study, largely funded by Cancer Research UK, recruited 948,576 postmenopausal women, representing a quarter of all women aged 50 to 64 in the UK. Around a third of the women were undergoing HRT, and a further fifth had received it in the past.

When you spend all of your time alone, or with only one other person, it's easy to become isolated and out of touch with reality, without even realizing it. Staying in touch with a wide range of friends is the best way to stay tapped into the real world.
Unlike strangers or business acquaintances, friends care about you enough to tell you the truth - even when it might not be the easiest thing to do. Friends can offer constructive criticism, a nudge in the right direction or a little humility when your ego's a bit overblown.
