25 random things about Kuwait...

What do you know about Kuwait? Did you realize that 'Mahboula' means 'insane woman' in Arabic or that the country once exterminated all alley cats but was overrun by rats so it allowed the alley cats to roam freely once again? Did you know Kuwait's ring road system was designed by British engineers or that citizens will often establish public water fountains as memorials for dead loved ones?
A new fad - 25 random things about you - is sweeping the online world. Essentially it works like this: You write 25 random things about yourself and then send the list to 25 people and they will do the same. The point is to let your friends know more about you.
I'm not big on self disclosure so I thought it might be fun to compile a list of 25 random things about Kuwait. Some are snarky, some are real and some you find out only by living here. [by Jamie Etheridge]

Dad on son’s passport....

 A strange news report which has been published by the Al-Qabas daily has reportedly disclosed loopholes in the security system at border checkpoints which may make terrorists feel easy and comfortable.
The daily said a retired Kuwaiti and his son Yousef planned to tour the Gulf by land and gave their passports to the company agent to complete travel procedures at the border immigration post.
However, just prior to the departure the son opted out of the tour and the father continued on his way. However, the daily said the passports of the father and son mistakenly interchanged. The father continued on his journey. He left Kuwait on his son’s passport, traveled to Saudi Arabia and then to Jordan. None of the immigration authorities discovered the mistake. However, when the father was about to enter Lebanon, an official called out the name of Yousef.
The shocked father said, “Yousef is my son,” and the official asked him why he was traveling on his son’s passport. One of the sons then reportedly left for Jordan with the father’s passport and with the help of the Kuwaiti mission in Amman and a number of MPs helped to solve the issue.

 A Kuwaiti family — parents and three daughters — were living in a luxurious villa. However they lived an unhappy life because the father seemingly knew their every move inside the villa which aroused the suspicion of the members of the family, The father insisted that his daughters must live in a very spacious room saying he wanted to see all of them happy. It so happened after the father died in a car accident the family was shocked to find the father from his basement office was monitoring the movements of his daughters with the help of CCTV cameras.

 care to share ==============
Philip Pestano Memorial Justice at 3 A.M. by Fr. James B. Reuter, S.J.
*Note: This is the e-mail prayer brigade initiated by Fr. Reuter for Phillip.
Phillip Andrew A. Pestaño graduated from the Ateneo de Manila High School in 1989, entered the Philippine Military Academy, and became an Ensign in the Philippine Navy in 1993. He was assigned as cargo master, on a Navy ship.
He discovered that the cargo being loaded onto his vessel included logs that were cut down illegally, were carried to the ship illegally, and were destined to be sold, illegally. Then there were 50 sacks of flour, which were not flour, but shabu - worth billions. Literally, billions. And there were military weapons which were destined for sale to the Abu Sayyaf.
He felt that he could not approve this cargo. Superior officers came to him and said: "Please! Be reasonable! This is big business. It involves many important people. Approve this cargo." But Phillip could not, in conscience, sign approval.
Then his parents received two phone calls, saying: "Get your son off that ship! He is going to be killed!" When Phillip was given leave at home, his family begged him not to go back. Their efforts at persuasion continued until his last night at home, when Phillip was already in bed.
His father came to him and said: "Please, son, resign your commission. Give up your m ilitary career. Don't go back. We want you alive.. If you go back to that ship, it will be the end of you!" But Phillip said to his father:"Kawawa ang bayan!" And he went back to the ship.
The scheduled trip was very brief - from Cavite to Roxas Boulevard - it usually took only 45 minutes. But on September 27, 1995 , it took one hour and a half. When the ship arrived at Roxas Boulevard, Ensign Pestaño was dead.
The body was in his stateroom, with a pistol, and a letter saying that he was committing suicide. The family realized at once that the letter was forged. They tried desperately for justice, carrying the case right up to the Senate.
The Senatorial Investigation Committee examined all the evidence, carefully. Then they issued an official statement, saying among other things: Ensign Phillip Pestaño did not commit suicide. He was murdered. He was shot through the head, somewhere outside of his stateroom, and the body was carried to his room and placed in the bed. The crime was committed by more than one person. In spite of these findings, by the Senate, the family could not get justice. The case is still recorded, by the Navy, as suicide. For 12 years they have been knocking at the doors of those in power, to no avail. Now they realize that they should knock on the door of HIM who said: "Knock, and it shall be opened to you. Ask and you shall receive. Seek, and you shall find."
So they are asking all of the friends of Phillip from the Ateneo, from the PMA, friends of the family - including the girl he was engaged to marry - to say this prayer:
"LORD, we know that Phillip is safe with YOU, and will be safe forever, because he gave up his life, as YOU gave up YOUR life - for justice. If it is YOUR will, please let the truth be known of his heroic courage and strength and love of country. Let justice be rendered here on earth. But if it is not YOUR will that justice be rendered here, give each of us the grace to live and die as he did - following in YOUR footsteps. And at the last judgment, LORD, when all that is hidden will be known, let Phillip be seen as he really is - a brave young man who gave his life for honesty, truth, and justice."
* * *
Phillip Pestaño died at the age of 24. He was scheduled to be married in January of 1996, four months after he was murdered.
He was a martyr. A martyr is one who dies for the faith or for a Christian virtue. Phillip died for a Christian virtue - justice. It is not likely that he will ever be canonized, but he takes his place among the Unknown Saints.
Some military men are killed in battle. They are given a hero's burial. But Phillip died for a much deeper cause - he was trying to preserve the integrity of our Armed Forces. He died out of loyalty to the Philippines, in an effort to keep the oath that he made when he graduated from the Military Academy.
Graft and corruption are the curse of this nation. But when they take root in the heart of our Armed Forces, they threaten our existence as an independent, democratic country.
The family of Phillip Pestaño is doing the right thing. They are turning to GOD. They are praying that justice will be administered here, in our country, in our day. But if this is not GOD's will, then let us at least try to preserve the ideal of integrity in every mind and heart and soul.
Let's forward this message to every freedom-loving Pinoy in our list. Thank you.

 News!!!!!! =========
KUWAIT: The Umma Party political bloc slammed upcoming Valentine's Day and warned residents of celebrating it in Kuwait. The bloc warned the media against portraying the day as a festive occasion which misleads many Muslims. Umma part representatives said that Valentine's Day celebrations can be considered backward practices since they date back to thousands of centuries. They questioned some people's inclination towards imitating the West and warned against blindly imitating western constructs. Celebrating Valentine's Day violates Islamic code of conduct even though some Christians trace the tradition back to the ancient Romans. Islam emphasizes that there is only one Almighty God that's Allah, therefore, the Party said that celebrating Valentine's Day violates Islamic way of life.

 It is very sad to read about killings or suicides by students who were under pressure because of homework. Sometimes these students become involved in disputes with their parents over homework that end when someone pulls out a knife or gun! A 15-year-old boy recently killed five members of his own family, including his own mother, over a fight that erupted over homework. Is homework really worth this sad ending?

the shoe era

What's this new trend? Shoe throwing at news conferences? A year ago we had never heard of such acts till the Iraqi journalist Muntadhar Al-Zaidi in December threw both his shoes at former US President George Bush during a press conference with Nouri Al Maliki while Bush was on his farewell tour of the region. What a farewell he got in Iraq!
And less than a month ago, an MP in the Egyptian parliament threw his shoe during a heated debate at a colleague. And then yesterday, a protester threw his shoe at the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao while he was giving a speech at Cambridge University in the UK. The Chinese PM was lucky, as the shoe landed a meter away and failed to reach him. Unlike the one which sailed right over Bush's head. The shoe has become a sign of protest, even during demonstrations. A extremist Kuwaiti MP Walid Tabtabae waved his shoes during a protest for Gaza in front of the National Assembly.
The funniest part is that many people are offering money - and handsome amounts - for these shoes. Someone offered $10 million for Al-Zaidi's shoes and KD 10,000 for Tabtabae's. No money was offered for the Egyptian parliamentarian's shoes. But don't get overexcited guys, thinking that throwing shoes can get you money. It could be the contrary, you could get a bullet from a bodyguard instead.
We have yet to see more shoes flying in conference halls. I think there will come a time when shoes will be banned from everywhere. You can't wear them to hear a speech, to attend a hall conference or a press event or whatever. You're always afraid that someone might throw a shoe in the air.
Leave alone the headache of taking off your shoes at airports and passing them through the scanners. All because one weirdo from France who got on a plane to the US and tried to start a fire and snuck matches in his shoes. Damn him. We all suffer from his stupid act. A friend told me, if she ever meets this guy, she will slap him with her - guess what? - shoe. So I guess we're in the shoe century.

 The 10th "Hala February 09" festival. Rainy weather forced event organizers to postpone the carnival from Friday to yesterday. The opening festivities started at Al-Thuraya Complex and continued down the street. Thirteen troupes from different countries participated in the event and traditional Kuwaiti bands presented folk music and art displays, including Haban and Bedouin art.
A huge crowd of people of all ages and nationalities came to participate in the carnival. "The opening of the carnival kicked off just 30 minutes ago, and now you can see the whole street fully crowded with people, and more people are still coming. This reflects the success of this carnival. I notice that every year the festival is improving and this includes the opening carnival. People of many nationalities are attending this carnival, and it's a chance for expats to express their love for their second home: Kuwait.
Media members made a great effort to cover the carnival in its entirety. "TV reporters are here since 9:00 am, although the carnival starts at 1:30 pm. The technical staff and their cars along with equipment were here since last night. We are broadcasting live the whole ceremony through the evening. We also broadcast more programs during the festival,"said Abdulmuhsin Al-Baqawi, a reporter from Kuwait TV.
This year, the carnival concluded at 5:00 pm without any fireworks. "The show was supposed to be held yesterday and was held today instead because of the rain.
Along both sides of the street, different kiosks sold flags, snow sprays, toys, outfits, accessories, food and other items. Some even participated with some homemade outfits and other products.
Some people attended the carnival for the first time. "I'm new in Kuwait. I came to Kuwait just one month ago. I didn't know about this carnival and I came by accident. I really like the show and I think it is exciting. We came to find out what it was all about. We liked the music of the bands and how the dancers danced to the beat of the drums." said Merry Hetherington and Robert Holmes of the US.
