On Tuesday evening, illegal vegetable sellers in Khaitan attacked inspectors after they were rounded up for illicit hawking. Municipality inspectors reported to the area which the peddlers had transformed into a makeshift market selling vegetables and other stock. But once they began trying to arrest them, the peddlers started throwing rocks and assaulting the cleanup crew that accompanied the inspectors.
The situation was controlled only after inspectors used gunfire to stay the peddlers, and managed to put them under arrest and confiscate their stock. A reported 15 peddlers were arrested and will be investigated regarding the violence.
Hundreds of thousands of impoverished expatriate workers - many from poorer Asian or Arab states - come to Kuwait to work. Many will take jobs that pay KD 40 to KD 60 a month and earn money on the side by hawking at illegal markets, begging or engaging in other forms of menial labor. Many live in crowded, low rent areas like Jleeb or Khaitan, and protests can quickly escalate out of control due to the large crowds and the frustration and desperation of many of the workers.
