Filipino maid's murder case appeal postponed till March Feb 12, 2006 8:07 am 234 Views Filipino maid's murder case appeal postponed till March By Nancy Oteifa KUWAIT: Yesterday was the first day in the Court of Appeal for the Filipino maid Marilou Ranario, sentenced to death for the murder of her sponsor. The Feb 11 court session was held in private and the press was not allowed to attend. This was because there was only a temporary judge sitting in the case. Only some Kuwaiti lawyers and representatives from the Philippine embassy were allowed inside the session. The session lasted less than an hour and the case was postponed till March 4, because the defence team had several requests. First of all they called Dr Inas Abu Al-Fadl to ask the suspect some questions concerning the case. They also want a committee from the Kuwait University Faculty of Medicine to study the accused. They also want Tareq Al-Khars, a Kuwaiti lawyer to be involved in the case. Ranario will be remanded in jail until the next session. Ricardo M. Endaya, Charge d'Affaires from the Philippine embassy attended the session, along with a delegation from the Philippine capital, Manila. This included Attorney Angelo Jimenez, the Deputy Administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and Ofelya Castro, a former embassy official in Kuwait. Their translator was allowed to attend the private court session. Endaya said, "The embassy is wishing the best for its citizen and the embassy is doing its best to stand side by side with Ranario, and we wish to see her to acquitted, and we know very well that Kuwaiti law is fair and we will never leave her." Abdul Majeed Khuraibet, a lawyer and a member of the Kuwait Human Rights society commented on the case, "We are waiting to know the real motive behind Ranario killing her boss, some times they say that she is mentally disturbed and that she suffering from schizophrenia, while another time they deny this and say that she is mentally normal. But if she was normal and killed her boss on purpose, then she is not a victim and she must be harshly treated." The appeal in March hopes to lift the death sentence currently faced by the woman. 3 Comments
