isize 2]KUWAIT: The secretary general of the manpower restructure programme Dr Waleed Al-Wehaib said that 90 per cent of jobless people are women. In addition, he said a huge number of Kuwaiti men and women are not serious about working, as a number ask to start working in positions of authority despite not having qualifications or experience. He added that 15,000 out of the total number of people who applied for jobs have lower teaching degrees and some of them have only high school diplomas.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match
By Shamael Al-Sharikh
Other people's miseries are never funny. No misery is more sad for the person concerned than being lonely and not finding a suitable partner. Yesterday, I read in the Kuwait Times about a Kuwaiti woman who reportedly was robbed by a matchmaker, as she gave the matchmaker the sum of KD550 in order for her to find an appropriate husband. The woman received neither the much-desired groom nor her initial investment in this matrimonial business deal. She went to the police to report the thieving con artist clad as a matchmaker.
This is not the first nor will it be the last incident of con artists who prey on women whose only fault is that they do not want to break away from tradition and Islam and look for a husband through non-traditional means. Furthermore, this is not a critique of the concept of matchmaking, because anyone who has seen a fashion magazine or an episode of the reality TV show "Gastineau Girls" knows that matchmaking is not an Arab invention and is quite common in many less conservative cultures. However, in the Western world, being single is not an issue of magnanimous social concern because men and women of all ages openly date and can have several relationships until they finally find the person that is right for them.
Alas, ours is a different situation. In the Gulf region, it is socially unacceptable for men and women to date. The only difference is that a man dating is frowned upon but everyone turns a blind eye, whereas a woman dating is scandalous and everyone starts wagging their tongues. So where does this leave the poor old woman who wants to find a suitable partner? Enter the matchmaker.
The incident above reminds me of the musical Fiddler on The Roof, which is centred around a conservative Jewish family with five daughters, all of whom are expected to wed by an arranged marriage through Yente, the matchmaker. The most notable song of this musical is actually called "Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match... find me a catch." At the end of the musical, all five daughters eventually get married, but none through a matchmaker and the parents of the daughters start to wonder about the changing times and letting go of some traditions.
Perhaps the matchmaker is a good choice for those shy people who cannot meet others on their own. Perhaps it is common among conservative families who view inter-gender mingling outside of the culturally-permitted boundaries as a carnal sin. Perhaps it is a good choice for those who have lost all faith in finding their soul mate and instead are willing to settle for any partner that fits their basic criteria. I am in no position to judge anyone for resorting to a matchmaker, nor am I in a position to promote it as a sound choice for everlasting love through marriage. I just think it is sad that when people use the loneliness of others to make a quick buck and even sadder that there are lonely people willing to put their hard-earned cash into the trust of random strangers just to escape the state they are in. As for those of you in healthy relationships, enjoy it. You are the envy of the lonely.

A Kuwaiti woman reported to police that she gave a matchmaker KD 550 in order to find her a husband. The matchmaker informed the woman that she would find her a match, but when she called her she did not answer. The citizen reported the matter to the police saying that the woman did not bring back her money or find her a husband. A case was filed and police summoned the woman.
