Obese people 'likely to lose sight'

Obese people are twice as likely to lose their eyesight, according to a new report.
The study, from the Royal National Institute of the Blind, warns millions of obese adults and children in the UK are at risk of losing their sight.
Report author and RNIB eye health consultant, Barbara McLaughlan, said previous research had shown that being obese increased the risk of developing conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts.
Such conditions carried an increased risk of permanently damaging the sight and or total blindness, she said.
Ms McLaughlan said: "Obesity doubles the risk of cataracts and increases the risk of retinal vein occlusion by four times.
"With a staggering one in five adults and children in the UK now considered to be obese, RNIB believes it is vital that people are made aware of the risks to their sight.
"Sight is the sense we most fear losing, but most people don't do nearly enough to look after their eyes.
"To safeguard sight we recommend people maintain a healthy weight, eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, take exercise to improve general health, don't smoke and most importantly have regular eye tests.
"Many thousands of people lose their sight each year through conditions that could have been treated if picked up early enough through an eye test."

Men more intelligent than women?

Men are more intelligent than women, according to new research.
Two leading scientists - both men - say male IQs are 3.63 points higher than females.
Psychologist John Philippe Rushton claims this explains the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon why men get promoted over women.
He said the study proves more men reach the top of their careers because they are smarter - and not because of \bsexo?\b discrimination.
Prof Rushton's team analysed 100,000 aptitude tests taken by 17 and 18-year-olds of both sexes.
And he said men were more intelligent "throughout the entire distribution of scores, in every level of family income, for every level of fathers and mothers' education, and for each and every one of seven ethnic groups".
He claimed girls did better than boys at school only because they "mature faster", and says his findings echo those of another academic, Richard Lynn at the University of Ulster.
But the study was slammed by top psychologist Prof Alan Smithers.
He said: "The fact women have not progressed so far in their careers is down to lifestyle choices. I strongly disagree with Prof Rushton's conclusions - he is reading wrongly and too far into the figures.
"Measuring intelligence is not the same as measuring length or temperature."

World's first penis transplant

Doctors in China say they have successfully carried out the world's first penis transplant.
A 44-year-old accident victim was given the organ of a brain-dead patient half his age.
Surgeons who performed the procedure claim it was a success. The man was able to urinate through his new organ within 10 days.
But the team said the donated penis was removed after two weeks due to "a severe psychological problem with the recipient and his wife".
Although male \bsexo?\b organs have been re-attached before, it is the first time another man's penis has been grafted on.
During a complex 15-hour operation, docs stitched nerve fibres and blood vessels to the donated four-inch organ.
Tests showed it had a rich blood supply and after just 10 days, he was able to urinate without the use of a catheter, a report in the European Journal of Urology said.
Professor Andrew George, of Imperial College London, said: "It takes time for nerve sensations to kick in and it's not clear whether the patient would ever be able to have \bsexo?\b with it." [by ananova]

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest --- and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands."

Joke!!! A 6th grade teacher posed the following problem to one of her arithmetic classes: "A wealthy man dies and leaves ten million dollars. One-fifth is to go to his wife, one-fifth is to go to his son, one-sixth to his butler, and the rest to charity. Now, what does each get?"
After a very long silence in the classroom, one little boy raised his hand and with complete sincerity in his voice, answered, "A lawyer!"

A confused world

Clash of civilisation, jihad, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, nuclear proliferation and the list continues. We today seem to be creating our own nightmares. By sustaining hatred and by pouring oil on a blazing heat, we could very well ignite chaos. As if in our contemporary world there is not enough hatred we needed the pope, head of the Catholic faith suggest that there is truly a crusade aimed at ridding the world of Muslims. A remark that reminds us of an era best left to rest in the corridors of time. What was the pope thinking when he quoted "..Show me just what Muhammad brought that was not new, ...and there you will find things only evil and inhumane, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
Do we really need to bring out our differences so starkly? What gain does such a remark bring to humanity? Time and again I have mentioned the dangers of fire and its use, which seems to be a game that both radical Muslims on one side and radical Christians on the other use to create a world less stable for us all. When you have leaders expressing terms such as Bush's latest remark linking Islam to fascism, Tony Blair and his evil ideology, coupled by Danish newspapers defaming the Prophet and now the Pope's sly and ugly comments...what do you would expect from the Islamic world?
Global media plays a drastic role in shaping our understanding of one another, such entities are prone to bias, some quite remarkably. News coverage at times simply ignores certain aspects of stories, creating a vacuum of information that is then filled with suppositions and suggestions as to what the viewer should understand from such conflict.
For instance the genocide currently taking place in Darfur is rarely talked about despite some claiming that it is turning into one of the most horrific crimes of our era with at least 200,000 dead. It rarely makes headlines! But what happens when two Israeli soldiers are kidnapped and then Israel launches a war on Lebanon? I guess in the global perspective we are not all created equal. Freedom fighters or terrorists? A title is nothing more than a connotation. When it comes to murderers and thugs, we connote them with criminals that deserve to be judged and sentenced. Yet when it comes to people that have seen their entire families killed, their houses destroyed, their sisters raped, and their futures tarnished what options do you leave them with? Do you not expect them to want to avenge their deaths? Regardless of if it is right or wrong, we as humans seem to have certain traits that unite us, and the desire for revenge is certainly one of them.
I believe that people don't commit mass murder for no reason; they certainly don't do so out of the blue. I think that past our anger at terrorism the only way we would be able to eradicate it is by tackling the problem from its source.
I think that if we start to understand why people resort to such acts, we can come up with solutions to bring an end to terror. It would be naive to think that no physical action is needed; however the danger of killing leaders is that they become martyrs in the eyes of their followers and thus it further stimulates them to finish what their master has preached to them. We this century will be faced with many challenges that we will have to deal with not as countries or individuals, but as humanity. Global warming, climate change, natural disasters, and the list goes own. Our only hope to survive is if we leave our ideological differences to the side, and if we focus on things that unite us. For comments and or thoughts.

Julie Yap Daza's Experience FROM JULIE YAP DAZA
I just want to share that two years ago, I went to see St.Therese's remains when it was put on display in the Carmelite Church. I went there because I was curious what was this euphoria about the world's youngest saint whose job is to grant people's wishes?
So I went with friend Lyn and I must admit the life of the little child,Therese, intrigued me. It turned out she was a child who wanted to serve her God more than anything else in the world. Thus, in every chore that she did: even watering the plants, she performed it like it was for her master.
Since all her siblings were Carmelite nuns, she became a nun herself, the youngest (12) to be allowed inside the convent. So we're talking of a pure "uncorrupted soul". And then she died. But she left a journal (suggested reading!) which contained all her thoughts about God, love and life. Since then she became the saint who grants all wishes.
Believe it or not, my wish was granted! Not because I said a novena but knowing about her life and reading her works inspired me and made me more patient and persevering.
According to religious beliefs, St. Therese was known as: "The Little Flower". Whenever you ask for intercession to her for a miracle, she will send you a rose in one form or another when the miracle has been granted.
You may smell roses, receive a rose by visual means, etc.REMEMBER to make a wish before you read the poem. That's all you have to do. There is nothing attached. This is a powerful novena. Do not break this, please. Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost but a lot of reward. Let's continue praying for one another.
Make a wish before you read this poem.... (Did you make a wish?) if you don't make a wish, it won't come true.
May today there be peace within. May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and to bask in the sun. It is there for each and every one of you.
Through early morning fog I see.........visions of the world to be.......
