What material was used to make early candles? May 12, 2008 9:39 am
310 Views
In Rome, around the first century, candles were made out of tallow and the pith of rushes. The Egyptians and Cretans made the candle from beeswax, as early as 3000 BC. The early candle was made from various forms of natural fat, tallow, and wax. In the 18th century, spermaceti, oil produced by the sperm whale, was used to produce a superior candle. Late in the 18th century, colza oil and rapeseed oil came into use as much cheaper substitutes.

Mother's Love May 9, 2008 1:22 pm

Dedicated to all the mother's in the world, and future mother's to be. God Bless!

Her love is like an island
In life's ocean, vast and wide
A peaceful, quiet shelter
From the wind, the rain, the tide.
'Tis bound on the north by Hope,
By Patience on the West,
By tender Counsel on the South
And on the East by Rest.
Above it like a beacon light
Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer;
And thro' the changing scenes of life
I find a haven there.

Are there actual things as cooties? May 7, 2008 1:36 pm

And you thought kids were just making this up!

There really are such thing as "cooties." Though most people believe that "cooties" is just a nonsense word used by children to describe unpleasant insects, cooties are in fact a kind of body lice.

What are a cat's whiskers for? May 7, 2008 1:35 pm

For all you cat lovers, here's an interesting fact.

A cat uses its whiskers to determine if a space is too small to squeeze through. The whiskers act as feelers or antennae, helping the animal to judge the precise width of any passage.

Adversity - Collection of Inspiring Quotes May 7, 2008 1:20 pm
394 Views
Just like with failure, we have all experienced some type of adversity in our lives. It's human nature to put blame on others, but God challenges us to take a positive spin on the situation. Each adversity that we come across is a learning experience. It makes us stronger. It tests our faith in Him. Perhaps the biggest obstacle we have to overcome when this occurs is when we start to feel sorry for ourselves. That life is unfair. We start to question the existence of God, or how he could have let this happen. Perhaps this is connected with things not going the way we planned things to be. But who really knows what's best for us, but God Himself? Perhaps it wasn't the right time, or the right person, or the right circumstances for us. Perhaps it's God's way of reminding us that what we're doing right now, isn't what God wants us to be doing. Perhaps it's His wake up call, that we're not living up to our true potential. Whatever the reason, never lose faith. Never lose hope. God is always looking out for us. Jesus himself said to God "Let not my will, but Your will, be done." God Bless Everyone!

Failure - Collection of Inspiring Quotes May 6, 2008 3:13 pm

We've all failed at one point in time, or have had others fail our expectations. Do not let this trouble you for long. We are all human and have had lapse of judgement from time to time. Remember, it's not how often we fail, but how many times we get up. To err is human, to forgive is divine. God Bless Everyone!

Failure

My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.
- Abraham Lincoln

It's okay to mourn your failure, but never ever give up

You're on the road to success when you realize that failure is only a detour.
- Anonymous

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don't fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.
- Jim Rohn

Make failure your teacher, not your undertaker.
- Zig Ziglar

I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.
- Thomas A. Edison

How did the ready-made clothing industry come to be? May 6, 2008 10:52 am

The first time an enormous amount of clothing was needed all at once was during the Civil War, when the Union needed hundreds of thousands of uniforms for its troops. Out of this need came the ready-made clothing industry.

I guess all the clothing stores have the Civil War to thank!

Where did the 'high five' come from? May 6, 2008 10:49 am

In the 1931 Rose Bowl game, "Five-Yard" Fogerty carried 25 times and gained exactly 5 yards on each carry. It was in that game that teammates celebrated the oddity of Fogerty's achievement by slapping palms – this practice is now known as exchanging "high fives." The results of that game were Alabama, 24, Washington State, 0. Fogerty played one year of professional football before breaking his leg in a skiing accident. He became a bank president in Wichita, Kansas. Sadly, he died five days before his retirement.

For My Journey May 1, 2008 4:54 pm

God's presence I covet
to guide me each day,
His word to give courage
when trials come my way.

Some change in my pocket,
a place in the sun,
a pillow to rest on
when day's work is done.

Someone to be near me
when dark shadows fall,
to cheer and uplift me
when my faith is small.

What more could I ask for,
what treasures unknown;
for I'm just a pilgrim
and heaven's my home.

The surface temperature of a neutron star is about 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit.

I'd like to see the thermometer they used to measure that!
