Complaint vs Gratitude.

I was driving one night on the way to work, on a cold winter night , it was about 5 degrees celsius. Brrr I complained, I hate cold. I also noticed I was wearing an old jacket that I have been using for almost 10 years. I said to myself time for a new one. I can complain for many more things like I should be sleeping in a warm cozy bed instead of going to work.

I turned the radio on and the host was talking about a research on the good effects of gratitude on health and general well being. There were many studies mentioned, to cut it short most of them showed good outcome for people who practiced gratitude. One research showed that those who wrote about gratitude were more optimistic and felt better about their lives. Surprisingly, they also exercised more and had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on or complained about aggravation. .

Other studies have looked at how gratitude can improve relationships. For example, a study of couples found that individuals who took time to express gratitude for their partner not only felt more positive toward the other person but also felt more comfortable expressing concerns about their relationship.

This reminded me of a person I know who always complain about anything. I am normally a grateful person but after hearing the radio host I realize I have more to be thankful for. I can cultivate attitude of gratitude more. Gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them happier, or thinking they can't feel satisfied until every physical and material need is met. Gratitude helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack.

It was a slapped on my face when while driving I saw a homeless person , wrapped in blanket pushing a trolley. I was touched and challenged by the host to change my attitude from a complaint to gratitude. One example he said, "thank you for the person singing off key behind me in the church because that means I can hear."

I have challenged myself to convert complaints to gratitude. Like thank you for this cold weather because it means I have sensation on my skin. Thank you for this old jacket because it means it was made from a very durable material to last this long.

Now I pass the challenge to you. Can you turn a complaint into a gratitude? Come on give it a go, write one down below.

It is true. While we whine about things we don't have or don't like, there are millions all over the world who are so deprived and will be willing to take our place. Take for example when we complain about the taste of the food we eat. Billions are hungry and will be willing to eat our left overs even if they are already spoiled. Instead of complaining, we should be grateful for what we have and those we do not need anymore, we should share to the less fortunate.

That's so true Elz, but I guess it is okay to complain to bring about change or improvement but not to complain of what we do not have but be grateful of what we have.

I always say elderly with dementia or alzheimer's are lucky because when they pass away they don't remember anything , they don't remember any pain or that they are leaving behind someone.

Very true Ta Jane. Some people even lose and ruin their precious time complaining,
