HEY, NATURE SAYS IT'S PAY BACK TIME

I was eight and 16 years old when I visited my mom's native land, the Philippines. She said the nation was not flood prone during her time the way it does since tropical storm Ondoy and the Habagat, the latest of which is typhoon Maring, its heavy rain brought by a cold front as the immediate cause of the massive flooding. Manila had a system of creeks or esteros but these waterways were gradually filled up because of the greediness of politicians and businessmen plus the squatters who help in polluting the sea. The devastation of forests, the destruction of natural barriers due to indiscriminate quarrying have led to floods, landslides and mudslides. It was a result of unabated legal and illegal logging and mindless land use conversion. Multitude of man holes were covered during the time of GMA as Filipinos throw out their cartons of their eaten fries as well as the styrofoam and rubbish in the streets. What is so sad is that the people who are affected are ordinary fellows who can barely keep up with their day-to-day living. The high officials who issued permits to logging companies and the owners of these corporations are in the comfort of their homes. A light drizzle easily causes flood waters to rise. If the denizen of the country where my mom was born will take hand in hand and become discipline, maybe the next generation will still see a safer haven of rest.
