Although I had never met a Filipino in real life, I will never forget the first time I saw Paolo Montalban on television. It was 1997 and he was in a made-for-tv movie called "Cinderella." When he sings the song "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" I feel like he's singing it to me. He makes my heart melt like buttah ! I could watch this movie over & over again. And thus, my love for Filipinos began all because of my crush on Paolo Montalban.

I barely remember that. He was filipino? Wow, that was a beautiful song.
DerbySteve replies on 6/16/2008 9:06 pm: Born in the Philippines, Paolo is one of two children. The Montalban family moved to America when Paolo was just one year old. He lived in an apartment in Manhattan, and then in New Jersey, where he grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by mostly Filipinos. He grew up in a musical family: his father played the piano, two aunts studied the violin and piano at Julliard, and his mother was involved in the theater while a student at St. Paul's College in Manila. Like many other Filipino American children, he learned how to play the piano, as well as the violin and saxophone. And like many Filipino American children, he doesn't play anymore. When Paolo was attending grade school, he auditioned for his school's production of "Oliver" and got the lead role.
Paolo graduated with a pre-med course at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After graduation, he had his eyes set on Broadway. His parents only wish was for him to get a college degree, which he did. However, after he got his diploma, he went straight for Broadway. His parents did support him in his decision primarily because he had a New York agent during his last year in college, with whom shortly after signing, secured him his first professional job on a national tour with "Man of La Mancha".
Paolo's success has convinced many Filipinos that he is the next best thing to happen to them since Lea Salonga. In an interview, he laughs saying "I wouldn't put myself in the same scale. She's a star. I'm just a guy." Though he may think he is just a guy, he too is considered a star to many people. Paolo understands the disadvantages of being an Asian actor in Hollywood. There isn't much in Hollywood for a stereotypical Asian who knows Kung-fu, who's a gangster or delinquent, or a wise munk of some sort. Still, nothing is stopping him. In the mean time, he's busy auditioning for other roles and relaxing playing video games and watching the cartoon channel. |

have you ever had a Pinay GF in real life?
DerbySteve replies on 6/18/2008 1:58 pm: I was born a homosexual. I have never had any kind of girlfriend because I am not attracted to them. I have only had boyfriends that are also gay like me. |

What does he look like now?
The first time I ever met a Filipino was this roommate of mine I had about, oh, '90, '91, in Columbia, Missouri. His name was Adalbert Rojales, and he was a Universtiy student majoring in vet. medicine. He looked just like Towa Tei from the band Deee-light (You remember, "Groove is in the Heart"?) even though that guy is Japanese/Korean. Al was funny and nice and had absolutely no body hair, and we got along at first, but things soured quickly when one of our other roommates was inspired by me to come out as gay, and Al accused me of trying to steal his friends and turning them against him. He was very territorial. I suggested he go into Macho Dancing, and we had a big screaming fight and later on I moved out and have never seen him again. But I don't hold that experience against all Filipinos. The Filipinos I've met on cruises have been very nice people. I hope to meet more in the future. And not just on cruises! But another cruise would be nice.

And I thought sexual preference is a choice?
DerbySteve replies on 6/22/2008 11:37 pm: Wow! And I think sexual orientation is genetic! If it's a choice, I know I would have never chosen to be gay. Why would anyone choose a life where you are discriminated against, hated, and condemned by virtually every religion? |

Sexual preference a choice? M'dear, this may seem true today - metrosexual, Will & Grace, etc. 'tain't so, McGee. Dig up a 1968?() movie called BOYS IN THE BAND. See what "Gay" life was like pre-Stonewall. And that flick was made pre-HIV! No, one is what one is, sexually, it's just that some are more honest than others. There's the late 14yo Larry King - and then there's (still!?) Senator Larry Craig. Thank GOD youth helps honesty.
