Being In Control
Fil-Americans and OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) are very prone to abuse by their family, relatives, and friends, and even by their co-nationals. Everytime a Balikbayan decides to spend holidays, vacations or even just a short visit to the Philippines, it always comes with worrying what to bring as gifts to those people. It may sound unfair for me to say that, because the truth is, NOT everyone is like that. However, it cannot be denied that most of them expect something from someone who lives or works abroad. Well, speaking from my own experiences, I learned that even by so doing, people are not satisfied anyway. They always want something different, and more. What the heck! after almost 27 years of living in the USA, I tightened my belt, and I learned to ignore those kind of people. You can never please everyone....On the other hand, loving someone is a very good feeling, but I also learned that I have to either love myself more, or leave something for me, because too much love can be toxic, specially, if it is not reciprocated, worst, not appreciated. Trust? You can never really trust anyone completely, other than yourself...At times, we even doubt our own judgement...And last, they say, it is good to listen to others, but don't let them rule your own life. Learn to speak up and stand up for yourself. If you developed enemies, that is actually GOOD!...That can only mean someone hates you because you stood up for yourself, and they don't like that....It pays to have a control of your own life in accordance to co-existence with others. Otherwise, you are doomed.
