Bad Filipino Traits.....

Well, we know that Pinoys have a lot of qualities that the whole world admires, and it is also true that foreigners are smitten by our beauty and good nature. However, Pinoys do have embarrassing and unpleasant traits. Here in the USA and other countries, Pinoys (NOT ALL, though) who live/work in the same place, or who meet in public places and parties act in a bizzare/unpleasant manner...Try going to California...huh! even if you bump into a fellow Pinoy, s/he'll give that "who are you? " look. It's like saying: " I am better/richer than you! "

In NYC, Pinoy will victimize another Pinoy just to earn money. IF your Boss is a Pinoy amongst the "majorities", expect that person to be an A$$-Kisser, and with a crab mentality.

Here in McAllen, TX, most Pino/ays here are Nurses who have more than one job. But one thing I noticed here, is that just as they earn a lot of money, they are so "sleek and stingy" in so many ways. If you are not close friends with them, and there is an occasion where everyone shares/splits the bill, expect the sudden disappearance of some, pretending to be in the restroom or wherever/whatever! They'll find all the excuses in the world in order NOT to pay.

AGAIN, LET ME REITERATE THAT I AM NOT GENERALIZING THE PINOYS HERE, BUT JUST READ THE TITLE OF THIS BLOG..Below are more unpleasant Pinoy Traits...

I know of someone who lives here who had a visitor (Tourist) from RP who wanted to visit Las Vegas/Grand Canyon. This person and I have a common friend who resides there. Would you believe this person told her guest that she can stay at our common friend's place and that she can visit Grand Canyon as well, all expenses paid by the friend in Vegas?...THAT IS SO BAD! Our Vegas friend was so shocked by the commitment this person had created for her and her family. She was embarrassed to say NO. Her kids ended sleeping in one room for more than a week, she and hubby had to call in sick from their respective jobs just to entertain the RP Tourist, who did not even bother to ask if she was not inconveniencing the hosts.Imagine this tourist and the hosts never met before, and NO THANKS to our Texas common acquaintance who did not have a second thought compromising the situation at someone else's expense!..2 bad traits here..

Have you experienced being in a restaurant, with all of you as professionals and yet, you find almost 75% of women expect the men to foot the bill?..Personally, I find that unfair, specially if these same men did not offer to pay, and that their wives will "audit" the statements from their credit cards..To some people, they'd rather be thick-skinned, and I really hate to be around them.

When I travel, I see to it that I am comfortable, and that I will not cause any inconvenience to my friends, because I don't want to be inconvenienced by anyone. I will not be a pest, even if they sincerely and wholeheartedly invite me to stay at their place. If it's a shared responsibility, I give my share as agreed. And like I said, I am sensitive to the people around me too. I do not want to take advantage of others and I don't want them to take advantage of me too. Fair deal!

Get this one too. One Pinoy couple owns 4 luxury vehicles, and they would NOT let their "friends" have a ride on any of those. But when it's time to shop at Home Depot/Lowe's for building materials or heavy furnitures/appliances, this same couple would not hesitate to borrow and ask the help of others who own pick-up trucks to carry the heavy load, and not even offer to pay the gasoline..Hello!

You Better Believe it, TINI! ...I was shocked myself even on my first year here in the USA way back in 1991...Gosh!...I was so excited to see Pinoy/nays on the streets, malls of NYC, and greeted them Hi, Hello, Kumusta ka/yo, and all that...And guess what? I was snobbed most of the time, and with their heads up at that...I was so disappointed.

I learned my lessons from then on..I just look at them, and wait a while if I see a rather "impending" friendly look and then, I get it from there.....Come to think, they may have been citizens of USA a lot longer than I do, but come on!... PURO NAMAN MGA PANGO` ANG ILONG NAMIN!

Borrowing and not returning, be it money or otherwise from fellow Filipinos including relatives and strangers.

Some Pinoys who have lived in PI for most of their lives would assume that a fellow kababayan is rich enough when they/we live abroad which is often far from the truth. They don't consider the hard work it involves to keep continuing sending money, particularly when it's under appreciated.

I have this tourist book which gives advice on how to treat Filipinos based on our traits. A few advice were warnings to tourists about what not to do while visiting PI. Might share sometime because I quite agree with their points of view.

within each one of us, and let it begin with me (and each one of us)..one breath at a time.

A mate at work went on a Filipino chat room for the first time.
On his first day of chatting, he got a woman asking for money right away. tsk tsk

This is the kind of behaviour that portrays the rest of us in a similar light even though it's down to the individual's behaviour and not every Filipino does this.

elz i agree...but every culture is not perfect...pinoys in general are not united peeps...no common grounds whatsoever...pinoys are known as copycats...many pinoys thinks they are more superior than others but majority of the pinoys who migrated here to pursue the american dreams mostly came from the underpriveledge back home...once they upgraded themselves they think they belongs to the joneses...rat races are so common among pinoys...many pinoys who goes balikbayan likes so much attention and be look upon like a celebrity...

You can say that again, Lady E...And what makes it worse is that they do it to "kapwa-Pinoys".

Being the Traveler that you are, I am sure, you are equipped with all the knowledge of what to expect when you are out of your zone...Which reminds of a lot of people who owe me money "through my Mom" back home...If I say NO, my Mom would lend them anyway... and 90% of them didn't pay. Mom, cannot keep the money now, and that is one of my hardest decisions. My sister does.

I read and heard of this similar story several times. A once popular member here (Portuguese-Pinoy) said the same thing, that a woman who web-cammed with him, tried to coy him into wiring her money, and she would bare it all, in exchange or would do "anything sensual and sweksual (spelling) just so...

Manny, I know what you mean. I am pretty sure, you also have lots of stories to tell, being that you've been here most probably longer than me. I like to be low-profile...that invites less trouble for me when I go balikbayan..
