In today’s Gospel reading Jesus...

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus summarizes his entire approach to life with two simple phrases: “You shall love God… you shall love your neighbor.” Nothing could be simpler. For him, too, love is everything. It is what ultimately “moves the sun and the other stars.” Commenting on these words of Jesus, Pope Paul VI suggests the following examination of conscience:
“It is necessary,” he says, “to strengthen the direction of our life. It is easy to perceive whether we have this rectitude, or whether we are headed in the wrong direction, by asking ourselves, in the secrecy of our hearts, the following simple but significant questions. What do I desire most in life? What influences most my decisions? What do I consider most important… We must not let ourselves be swept along by the chaotic maelstrom of the world around us. We must give ourselves a point of reference, a pole of direction, a sense for life, in order that it may be really human, that is, Christian.
