According to the BBC, 50 phone calls on the "child phone" that is designed for children in case the seek an urgent help or inquiries, or anything related to their lives, 50 phone calls a day are made by children inquiring precisely about sex issues! some of these inquiries are made by girls not exceeding 12 years old, asking how do they know whether they are pregnant or not! and others are seeking some advices because their boyfriends are trying make love with them! The question remains, at what age should children start to know full info about sex? and whether it is the family responsibility, or should it be done through their schools, and at what age should school start such courses or classes?! It is also mentioned that some schools already started these courses and the age suggested for children to learn about sex is 9.What do parents think about sex education? Do mothers in particular already give such advices to their children, and at what age? what would you answer some critical questions asked by your child when it is related to sex? what you explain the whole process in a true and honest manner, or would u put the kids off so that they never ask such a question again? what do you think of the whole issue??

I am a Nurse, and living here in the USA has been so shocking to me, specially when I was assigned in the Pediatric ER...The first client I had was a 9 year old girl who was already swekxually active...I was almost tempted to strangle the mom who brought her to ER for pregnancy check up....

You know, there is really no general rule about when to start educating our kids in terms of sexual activities and information. It is such a delicate topic that it really entails a lot of tactfulness, and judgement on the parents part to initiate it.

6189 posts 5/6/2008 7:49 pm |
The first place where children may hear or see sexual activities and the like is the place called "home". Most parents may not exhibit sexual acts in front of their children...Or if they are in the master's bedroom, make sure that the door is locked. I'm sure, some of the readers may have experienced catching members of their families during their "interesting and embarrassing situation"...or worse, they've been caught, themselves!

Next thing at home to be monitored is the television...Most t.v. programs have PARENTAL CONTROLS...So, that if there are shows considered FOR ADULTS, then, those must not be shown or be available to kids...

6189 posts 5/6/2008 7:55 pm |
Sex Education in school raised a lot of critical issues...The State and Church almost always contradict each other in terms of when and how to conduct such. You may also consider the culture.

6189 posts 5/6/2008 7:57 pm |
When I was a kid, whenever my parents or any "adult" for that matter would talk something regarding SEX, they made sure that no children would hear the conversation...They'd send me to my room or at least at a non-hearing distance...It was a big No-No for us to listen to any of those delicate topics...or else! paw!paw!

Personally speaking, we were taught "scientifically" not "specifically" about Sex in school when we took the subject BIOLOGY..By that time, most of us (unless we were accelerated in school due to academic excellence) were at the age of puberty...I'd say, that was fair enough.

At this modern age, time, and generation, a child of any age may come up to his/her parents and ask them directly about SEX...How to go about it? Like I said, each one of us should be very tactful and we should gauge the level of understanding our children have, and do not be angry, but be thankful that they ask YOU, and not OTHERS...Be prepared to deal with the topic in the simplest, decent, informative level. Let us not inject any malice into our children's minds...or else, they may turn into sexual deviants...

seriously speaking ... i think the right time would be when your child ask you seriously about sex ... this is true ... my parents especially my mom brought us up in a very conservative matter ... meaning when me and my siblings were growing up ... we were forbidden to have a "betamax" because my mother feared that we would just watch sexy films ... so my father sold all the tapes, betamax, when he was still in saudi ... we were like growing up abnormally ... making us think that sex is dirty or sinful ... all my mother taught us to do was to go to church every sunday ... attend the mid-week service ... give all your money to the church ... so to make the long story short ... i am a product of of my mother's strictness ... until now ... it's causing me a lot of depression because i am still carrying it ... it's a burden to me ... remember my blog post wherein i refused to have a "trans-rectal ultrasound" ... that's it for now
