Alley Cat

There was once an alley cat who lived in a city. All her life she had been a stray, but she longed to have a human who would take her in and care for her. One day, she saw a man sitting in a park with some friends. He looked so cheerful, and his friends looked like they were having such a great time with him. The alley cat walked up to them and sat near grass where the man and his friends were. The man noticed her and picked her up then put her on his lap. He stroked her fur and gave her some of his sandwich. The alley cat felt happy and safe.

From day on, the alley cat would go to the park and keep him company from morning til afternoon. The man always brought her some milk to drink. They would spend their time together playing or lying in the sun while the man talked to her about things. The alley cat felt very happy whenever they were together, he was such fun to be with. But in the evenings, she would feel sad because the man had to go away.

“I come here during the day because I get so lonely at home. I live alone, you see and I wish I could find someone special to be with me,” he said one day. The cat reached out a paw and tickled his ear. That made him laugh. Soon they were playing on the grass, and neither seemed to have a care in the world.

A year passed and by this time the man and the alley cat had become good friends. They always had fun together, but they also had some not so good times. Because sometimes the man would tease alley cat a little too much, and she would get angry at him. They would then ignore each other for a few days, but they would always patch things up and spend time together as usual. There was only thing that puzzled the alley cat. If the man was as lonely at home as he said he was, why didn’t he bring her home so she could keep him company the whole time? They had a lot of fun during the day, so why not be together all the time? Whenever she tried to follow him, he would shake his head and say “Sorry kitty, but I’d rather not bring you home. I have my reasons but I would rather keep those reasons to myself.” And for the longest time the alley cat had to be content with that.

This didn’t mean however that she was willing to let matters remain that way. She had questions about him, and being a cat her curiosity started to get the better of her. She had also become very attached to him, and wanted to be with him all the time. After thinking it over, she finally decided to try to follow him without being seen. For several weeks, that turned into months, she tried but kept failing to follow him right up to his house. She never gave up though, because each time she could feel that she was getting nearer and nearer. Little things along the way were telling her she was getting there.

And one cold day in winter, she did it. She finally followed him all the way to his house. It was a neat, cozy looking bungalow that looked warm and inviting. Running quickly, she leaped up to the window sill, eager to see how the inside looked. And what she saw froze her in her tracks. The man was sitting on a chair, a beautiful Siamese cat on his lap. At their feet, three adorable young kittens were playing. That’s when it dawned on her….the man would never want her in his house. He would never ever take her in to be with him always because he already had what she could offer and even more.

With drooping whiskers, the alley cat jumped down and made her way back to the street, back to the alley where she lived. She never went to the park after that.
