I Have I Share

The pandemic times have shown people cared in their own humble ways. Many have come up with ways and means to help their neighbors, by putting up kitchen soup in the streets, preparing meal packs as giveaways to healthcare workers and the latest of which was the putting up of a "community pantry," where one avails for free, ingredients for a meal during the ..

The "community pantry" is a small market or what we in our language as, "talipapa," using stands and makeshift structures along streets, where vegetables and other kitchen staples are displayed for anyone to pick for free, to be able to feed oneself and family.

The long queues have strongly indicated that many are suffering from hunger because of no work and loss of business, due to covid 19. They come from all walks of life and line up as early as 4AM to be able to get what they can cook and serve to theit families. This was started by an individual and groups of people later on, with soft hearts and compassion to help others, without grandstanding their noble desires and deeds. As of this date many community pantries have popped up in Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The "bayanihan" spirit among Filipinos, one of its amazing traits, manifesting love for neighbor, is very much alive and never lost.

If I have extra food laying around or if I have spare money I can spend, I would. I don't see why not. It's a super humanitarian idea. However, it needs to be closely monitored to avoid hoarding though. I saw an incident on FB where these females "wiping out" the whole pantry's contents. It is a shame seeing a few of our kababayans acting that way. One way of avoiding that is to put up signs reminding folks to think about the others in need and take only what they need. Overall, it sure is a sign of goodwill that some of us can participate.

i can agree that the greedy attitude would always come out especially when a person is most wanting (lacking) and without means to sustain himself and family...it's his instinct of survival prompting that..but this can be avoided true with the announcement or caution made known, that one can be entitled and privileged to get what will give him a single meal and not getting his ration for a week, because there are also other persons along the queue like him, needing food...this can be done with a megaphone making the announcement repeatedly..that way, one will understand what is fairly right...

I agree. Tough times. A man's got to do what he has to do to survive. No work, no money, no food, ... what else is there to do? There could be worse case scenarios. Hopefully this dilemma will end soon.

Despite the epidemic not ending soon, the number of community pantries has amazingly increased in many places around the country..the idea swept the streets like wild fire where long long queues can be seen, again incredibly...while the endeavor is deemed laudable and the spirit truly gets infectious like the rapid spread of covid virus, it seemed like the government authorities are attachiing bad meanings into this kind of charitable works..it they cannot support it, they might as well stop kibitzing and putting bad colors to the good intentions of the persons involved.. and to please refrain from suggesting red-tape in allowing its operations..this, despite the involvement of the military and police who have been involved as of late in sponsoring the community pantires themselves..
