Dear Abbey!

Lack of Sleep

For a senior to_ have a day all good and going, it is important to_ have at least 6-8 hours of sound sleep. Am sure you will agree, even if you are not a senior yet. It is just normal for your body to have a complete rest and get re-energized.

What do you do if you have a room mate who does not respect that? The fact that you have someone sharing your room, you should at least be wary and respectable for the other occupant. I find it so annoying, when my room mate cannot sleep and puts on the boobtube, within hearing, throughout the night, because it is her means for a hypnotic spell. She is an insomniac in other words. Not only that, her relatives in Manila would do a video call during my sleeping time (past 9PM) and she would converse with them, without ever lowering her tone. If she didnt use her dialect talking, then I would find that acceptable. At least she honors me an eavesdropping circumstance. But kidding aside, it gets to_ my nerves. I can't find the right words to tell her this, without her being embarrassed. Can you tell me how diplomatic can I do it?

I know it is the price of leaving my home in the Philippines!

Sleeping Nerve

You are in Canada and therefore, what she is doing is wrong. She can put on her earphones so both of you can sleep. It's a big NO for me if my roommate has no respect nor is considerate. In Calgary, quiet hours are between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday to Saturday. If your neighbors or tenants are making noise when prohibited by by-laws, police can be called. For noise outside of these quiet hours, you can make an application to your local landlord and tenant board. Abbey should know all of these, or better remind her. Good luck and happy sleeping.

Even so in the Philippines, noise is not allowed beyond 10PM. I know Canada has more stringent rules. But because my home environment speaks of kinship dwellers, i find it difficult to be speaking up since the one person inconsiderate is a relative of my DIL, (a first cousin) who pays her fair share of living in this house. You can say am only a passer-by, being accommodated because am a blood and close relative of the couple who owns the place.

HOW ABOUT YOU WEARING THE EAR MUFFS OR HEADPHONES AND EYE PATCHES? kiddingly aside, I think, you should tell her that. Maybe she can step out of the room to do the facetiming or video calling of relatives...That is my advice...Just tell her nicely though, but straightforwardly...

And that's exactly what I do, when any of my children from Manila calls me during out sleeping hours here. I step out of the room so I don't cause any disturbance to her at all..she can't even pick up that stance..grrr!..or she could just probably no not probably but truly that insensitive..and since I cannot catch up on sleep because I have an automatic body clock that wakes up between 4-5AM each morning, I get to take my nap early evening, which is about 6PM-7PM or 8PM..she comes home during those times, puts on the TV loud enough to believe she is deaf and without regard for me..argh!..such a pain in the neckI..wait maybe she could be deaf, come to think of it?... and she doesn't even pay attention or watch the TV program that she has on..weird indeed! lol

some people are truly insensitive and selfish at the same time. I know of people who do things routinely, and yet, not even paying attention to them (such as turning on tv). It's ritualistic, and just course of bad habits...
